ball of wool cakeThis is a cake that I made for my friend Anna to celebrate her birthday and the start of her budding new craft empire (which can be found at http://felixandswitch.wordpress.com).  Anna’s incredibly creative and has been knitting, crocheting,  cross stitching and sewing since way back when.  I thought she would definitely appreciate a big ball of wool, knitting needles and some cutesy teddy bears.

This cake actually took a lot longer than I had anticipated, as I rolled out all the “wool” by hand!  Never again, if I have to make a similar cake I’ll definitely invest in a quality extruder:) Read More

Wiggles cakeThis was a cake for Max, who was turning three.  Apparently he was so impressed with the wiggles that he wanted to eat them all at once!!  I have also been told, quite seriously, that I made a massive blunder in the positioning of the wiggles.  As every die hard wiggles fan will tell you, they all have allocated seating…which I managed to get completely wrong…disaster!!  Luckily for me however Max decided to graciously forgive my most heinous of errors.

This was my first attempt at making fondant figures, while I was reasonably happy with the results for a first attempt, I have definitely learnt a lot for next time.

three tier black and white birthday cake

This is a cake that I made for my Mother in-law  Jasmine, for her birthday.  It’s one of the first multi tiered cakes that I have made.  It turned out to be a bit more difficult than I had anticipated, symmetry being so important for this cake.  Despite the challenge, i was none the less happy with the results, as was everyone else.  The cake was delicious coconut cake with white chocolate ganache…mmmm!

    Thank-you cake

This is a cake that my friend Megan requested.  She wanted to say thank you to a friend, and what better way than with cake!  Michelle, the recipient is a fan of all things pug, so we knew that she would appreciate it.

mystery box cakeThis is one of the first rolled fondant cakes I ever decorated.  It’s taken almost directly from a book called “Planet Cake, A beginner’s guide to decorating incredible cakes” by Paris Cutler.  The book was recommended to me by a pastry chef I talked to when I first became interested in decorating.  I can’t recommend  it highly enough to anyone interested in cake decorating, it is an invaluable tool, having both delicious cake recipes and going in to many very useful techniques and tricks.

wedding cakeThis is where it all began!  My very first attempt at making a fondant covered cake.

When, in the midst of wedding planning and preparation I was told how much a wedding cake would cost I’m fairly sure that I nearly feinted.  So, after picking myself up off the floor I gamely decided to make it myself.  We only had around two hundred guests, how hard could it be?  To cut a long story short it all worked out in the end.  Amazingly, there were no big disasters and very few tears, and the result was something that I was very proud of, especially the roses, having hand crafted them myself. dragonfly cakeThis cake i made for my friend maria for her birthday.  The hardest part for me on this cake was the piping.  I find piping hard at the best of times, but piping onto the side of a cake is an added degree of difficulty.  I did however manage it (with much practice) and was very happy with the results.

This was my first experiment at making a more three dimensional sculpted cake.  Megan is a mad keen “Dr Who” fan, so I was fairly sure that she would enjoy this, we did however get some odd looks at the restaurant!
